The 40-Hour Basic Mediation Course is a 5-day (8:30am – 5:30pm) training offered to the general public several times each year. This course is designed to give individuals the skills and credentials they need to serve as a mediator in the State of Texas. The training focuses on the community-based mediation model. Individuals actively participate in practice mediation following each lecture session, and certificates are provided to participants upon completion of the course.

Cancellations will be accepted until two weeks prior to the starting date of each class. There will be a $50 administration charge deducted from each refund. No refunds are available after the cancellation date.

About the Trainers:
About the Trainers:
Robert (Bob) Otey, Ph.D., Credentialed Advanced Mediator, Arbitrator, Bob’s professional career has included Teacher (Social Studies), athletic coach, private industry manager, school administrator, and university professor. Bob was the administrator of a separate program for middle school students experiencing emotional challenges in Austin Independent School District. In the 1970’s Bob developed the Drug Education Program at Dallas ISD and the Education Service Center Region 11 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He also directed the Secondary Alternative Education Program at Education Service Center Region 13 for several years. Bob went on to develop the Education Administration Program at Concordia University Texas in 2002. Bob served as Director of the program at Concordia for nine years. During his tenure as Director the program grew from a cohort of 20 students to a State-wide program with over 1,000 students. Bob has been mediating and training in mediation since the early 1990’s. He is treasurer of the Texas Mediation Trainers Roundtable (TMTR) and a member of the Texas Association of Mediators (TAM). Bob has taught the Basic Conflict course as an adjunct professor at St. Edward’s University in the Master of Human Services Conflict Resolution strand since 1990. Bob retired from Concordia in 2011 and devotes his time to training, mediating, and serving as an adjunct professor at St. Edward’s, Concordia, Huston-Tillotson, and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Beth S. Brown, TMCA Credentialed Advanced Mediator, Facilitator
Beth has been mediating at the Austin Dispute Resolution Center since 1994 and has been a mediation training coach and conflict resolution skills trainer since 1995. In addition to the basic 40-hour mediation training, Beth has completed training in family mediation, family reconciliation mediation, elder mediation, group facilitation, and group conflict management. Beth is a past board member and current member of the Austin Mediators Association and a member of the Texas Association of Mediators. She is a co-founder of The Center for Integrated Divorce, a program designed to assist couples who are committed to a non-adversarial process. Beth holds a Master of Science in Educational Administration specializing in Adult Education from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Her professional background includes 16 years in higher education administration at Texas State University and St. Edward’s University, and eight years as the executive director of The Academy of Medicine, Engineering & Science of Texas.
Diane M. Harvey, LCSW, TMCA Credentialed Mediator
Diane maintains a private therapy/mediation practice in Austin. She took the initial mediation training and family mediation training in 1999, and in the early 2000’s began coaching mediation training at the Austin Dispute Resolution Center (DRC). She also mediates at the Austin DRC, is a past board member and current member of the Austin Mediators Association, a past board member of the Texas Mediators Credentialing Association and is currently on the board of the Texas Association of Mediators as Immediate Past President. Diane is a co-founder of The Center for Integrated Divorce, a program designed to assist couples committed to a non-adversarial process. She is a frequent speaker and workshop leader for a variety of local, statewide, and national groups, focusing primarily on conflict resolution, mediation, communication, and mental health issues. Diane holds an MSW from Fordham University. After a long career with New York State in the mental health system (concurrent with years of union activism), she moved to Austin in 1993 and headed the social services department at a private psychiatric hospital. Diane was honored by the National Association of Social Workers Texas Capital Branch as 2014 Social Worker of the Year.
